Yushan Main Peak, standing at 3952m, is the tallest mountain in Taiwan and the entire Northeast Asia region. Its prominence and relative accessibility make it one of the most popular trekking destinations in Taiwan, attracting both local and international climbers. Also known as “Jade Mountain”, Yushan is not only a breathtaking natural landmark but also holds cultural significance. It is ranked #1 in Taiwan’s esteemed list of “Hundred Peaks” (百岳), a collection of notable mountains celebrated for their scenic beauty, ecological diversity, and cultural value.
The ascent to Yushan Main Peak is typically completed as a two-day trek, with most climbers staying overnight at Paiyun Lodge, located at approximately 3400m, before an early morning summit push to enjoy the sunrise. This experience, combined with the mountain’s stunning views of rolling clouds, deep valleys, and rugged terrain, has cemented Yushan’s status as a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts.
Given its popularity, the Taiwan Forestry Bureau has implemented a permit system to control the daily number of trekkers, capping entries at 116 permits per day. Permits are allocated through a ballot system, and competition is fierce, especially for weekends and public holidays, making it challenging to secure a spot without advance planning. Despite these hurdles, the trek to Yushan Main Peak remains a bucket-list experience, offering adventurers a unique journey through Taiwan’s pristine mountain landscapes.
