Haba Snow Mountain

Haba Snow Mountain (哈巴雪山), also known as Haba Xueshan (elevation: 5396m), is situated in the southeast region of Shangri-La 香格里拉 and to the northwest of Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡). As one of the tallest peaks in Yunnan province, this mountain maintains a perpetual snow cover throughout the year. In the Naxi language, “Haba” translates to golden flower.

In close proximity but rising opposite the more renowned Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山/5596m), there is a local legend suggesting a fraternal relationship between Haba Snow Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. These two grand mountains are flanked by the Jinsha River, which courses through them, giving rise to one of the world’s deepest and most picturesque gorges – the renowned Tiger Leaping Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global acclaim.

This snow-covered peak offers a year-round snowy spectacle. As Haba Snow Mountain is not difficult to climb (technically), it is therefore suitable as an entry level mountain that require basic ice and snow skills (ie: crampons, walking ice axe and fixed rope). The terrain is straight forward without crevasses. The 950m long snow slope, at the last section of the summit, famously known as the “Hopeless Slope” (绝望坡), is an onerous challenge on exposed terrain that requires a high level of fitness and endurance, but is also an ideal ground for crampons footwork practice.
